Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact
Komodo National Park is a global treasure—a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Man and the Biosphere Reserve, and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. At Daftar SIORA, we believe that the privilege of experiencing this extraordinary place comes with a profound responsibility to protect it. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is the guiding principle behind every SIORA registration we process and every journey we facilitate. Our mission is to ensure that tourism acts as a powerful force for good, contributing to the conservation of the park’s unique biodiversity and the prosperity of its local communities.
Environmental Stewardship
Our approach to environmental protection is proactive and multifaceted, focusing on minimizing our footprint and actively contributing to conservation initiatives.
1. Marine Conservation Partnerships
We channel a portion of our revenue and provide in-kind support to leading conservation organizations working directly within the park. Our key partners include:
- Komodo Survival Program: We support their vital work in monitoring the Komodo dragon population, conducting scientific research, and running anti-poaching patrols.
- Manta Trust: We contribute to their efforts to protect the manta ray populations at Manta Point and other key aggregation sites through research, education, and policy advocacy.
- Reef Check Indonesia: We support their coral reef monitoring programs, which provide crucial data for the park authority to manage marine protected areas effectively.
2. Carbon Offset Program
We recognize that travel has a carbon footprint. To mitigate this, we have partnered with Jejak.in, a verified Indonesian carbon offset provider. For every trip booked through our service, we calculate the estimated carbon emissions—from flights to Labuan Bajo to the fuel consumed by the liveaboard—and invest in certified carbon sequestration projects, such as mangrove reforestation in other parts of Indonesia.
3. Strict Operational Policies
We mandate that all our partners adhere to the highest standards of environmental operation:
- Zero Single-Use Plastic: All partner vessels are required to be free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles and amenities in refillable containers.
- Comprehensive Waste Management: A strict ‘pack-in, pack-out’ policy is enforced. All waste is sorted and securely stored onboard before being disposed of at approved facilities in Labuan Bajo. No waste is ever discharged into the sea.
- Reef-Safe Practices: We provide all guests with complimentary reef-safe sunscreen and educate them on responsible snorkeling and diving etiquette, emphasizing buoyancy control and a no-touch policy for all marine life.
Community Empowerment
A sustainable tourism model must benefit the people who call the region home. We are deeply committed to ensuring that local communities are respected partners and primary beneficiaries of the tourism economy.
1. Local Employment & Sourcing
We have a firm policy of prioritizing local employment. Over 90% of the guides, boat crew, and operational staff we work with are from Labuan Bajo and the surrounding villages of Flores, Rinca, and Komodo. Furthermore, we mandate that our partner vessels source their fresh produce, seafood, and other provisions from local markets in Labuan Bajo, directly supporting the local economy.
2. The ‘Daftar SIORA Community Fund’
We allocate 1% of our service fee from every booking to our Community Fund. This fund is dedicated to supporting tangible, community-led projects. Our current focus is on education and sanitation in Desa Komodo, the main village on Komodo Island. In partnership with the village leaders, we are currently funding the renovation of the local school library and the installation of a new water filtration system.
3. Promotion of Local Culture
We encourage our clients to experience the rich local culture in a respectful and authentic way. We facilitate visits to traditional weaving workshops in Melo Village and support local artisans by providing a market for their crafts, ensuring they receive a fair price for their work. Our goal is to foster meaningful cultural exchange, not just superficial observation.
By choosing Daftar SIORA, you are not just booking a trip; you are investing in the future of Komodo National Park. You are becoming part of a sustainable model that protects dragons, preserves reefs, and empowers communities.

Beyond marine conservation: protecting terrestrial wonders and managing waste
Imagine the sun-drenched scales of a Komodo dragon basking on volcanic sands, or the iridescent flash of a manta ray gliding through crystalline waters – these are the irreplaceable moments Daftar SIORA helps preserve. While the vibrant coral reefs and marine life of Komodo National Park often capture the spotlight, our commitment to environmental stewardship extends far beyond its underwater realms. The park encompasses approximately 1,733 square kilometers of land and sea, harboring unique terrestrial ecosystems, from dry savanna grasslands to monsoon forests. These diverse habitats are crucial for the survival of iconic species like the Komodo dragon, whose population numbers around 3,000 individuals, found only in this region of the world. Daftar SIORA actively supports initiatives focused on protecting these fragile land environments, ensuring the integrity of the entire ecosystem.
A critical component of our comprehensive environmental strategy is diligent waste management. In remote and pristine destinations like Komodo, preventing pollution is paramount. We implement stringent policies to minimize our operational footprint, prioritizing the reduction of single-use plastics across all Daftar SIORA-facilitated journeys. From reusable water bottles provided to guests to sourcing locally grown produce with minimal packaging, every detail is considered. Waste segregation and responsible disposal are strictly adhered to, with non-biodegradable waste carefully transported out of the park for proper processing in designated facilities, preventing it from ever reaching the ocean or pristine landscapes.
Furthermore, Daftar SIORA actively participates in and supports local clean-up initiatives, working alongside communities and other conservation partners to remove existing marine and terrestrial debris. Our approach is holistic: not only do we strive for zero waste from our own operations, but we also contribute to broader efforts to maintain the pristine condition of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This dedication ensures that future generations can continue to marvel at the unspoiled beauty of Komodo, both above and below the surface. Learn more about Komodo National Park’s UNESCO status.
Empowering local communities through responsible tourism
True sustainability is inextricably linked with community well-being. Daftar SIORA believes that responsible tourism must serve as a catalyst for positive change, directly benefiting the people who call this extraordinary region home. Our operations are designed to create meaningful economic opportunities for local residents, providing fair employment across various roles—from skilled boat crews and experienced guides who share their deep knowledge of the islands, to hospitality staff who ensure our guests experience the renowned Indonesian warmth. We are committed to fair wage practices and fostering a safe, respectful working environment that values local expertise and contributions.
Beyond direct employment, Daftar SIORA actively champions local entrepreneurship and cultural preservation. We prioritize sourcing goods and services from local businesses and artisans whenever possible. This includes fresh produce from nearby farms, handcrafted souvenirs made by village cooperatives, and utilizing small, family-owned service providers. By investing in the local economy, we help to create a ripple effect of prosperity, supporting traditional crafts like ikat weaving and empowering communities to maintain their unique cultural heritage while fostering sustainable livelihoods. This ensures that the economic benefits of tourism are widely distributed, strengthening the local social fabric.
Our commitment extends to supporting community development projects that address critical needs such as education and health. A portion of Daftar SIORA’s proceeds is channeled into initiatives that improve local schools, provide access to clean water, or support local healthcare programs. We collaborate closely with community leaders to identify the most impactful projects, ensuring our contributions are relevant and sustainable.
